“I just needed to know more about Rebecca.. Know what she was interested in, so I could be interested in it as well and then she’d see how our friendship was meant to be.”

Linda and her husband Terry are just your normal average suburban couple. Then Linda starts receiving magazines in the mail that are addressed to the previous occupant, Rebecca Finch. Everything in the magazines is so glamourous and Linda wonders if this is a sign for her to start living the life she deserves. If she can find Rebecca maybe it will change her life and some of that glamour will rub off on her.

This was my first time reading a book by Joanna Cannon. I struggled to get into the book at first as the MC is such a strange one to wrap your head around, but I just needed to warm up to her. It was as I made it to the halfway mark that I started flying through the rest of the chapters. Linda is not a very exciting person, she’s often overlooked and has her quirks.

She doesn’t have a great relationship with her mother who is constantly criticizing her and putting her down and this has gone on since childhood. Sadly, something traumatic happened to her as a child and she felt like she lost the parent she connected with the most.

She starts fantasizing about what it would be like to live this glamorous lifestyle depicted in the magazines addressed to Rebecca. She then makes a concerted effort to go out and find this mystery woman, convinced she knows exactly what this person is like and that they will become good friends. This is not the first time she’s become obsessed with a person and it never ends well for her. The story has a dual timeline. It is told from Linda’s POV. In the beginning everything is quite vague, but that adds to the intrigue as you want to continue reading to find out exactly what is really going on.

This is one for those lovers of contemporary fiction with an element of suspense and that ending will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about the characters.
