My Rating:

…it’s only when something’s damaged beyond repair that we realize how beautiful it was.

Marine biologist, Emma has a wonderful husband and daughter who she loves very much, but everything she has told them about herself is a lie. Her husband Leo is an obituary writer, so when Emma becomes very ill he decides to start writing about her. As he starts reading more about her life, he discovers that shes been keeping secrets from them.

Emma is such a complex character and I loved learning about her past and the secrets she has been keeping. It was very different to what you might think of when you start the book. The story is told from different perspectives, mainly Emma and Leo. It has three parts and my favourite part was delving into Emmas past which gives you so much information about how she has become the person she is today.

I kept thinking, how is this woman going to explain herself to her husband. When you keep so many secrets and those as big as she has, the explanation better be good.
This was one of those books where nothing is too far-fetched and everything is very plausible and could happen to anyone in our lives. It just depends on what you want out of a book. Sometimes you want to escape into an unrealistic fantasy world and sometimes many you want something more realistic with characters you can relate to and connect with and I feel like this one hits the nail on the head when it comes to the latter.

If youre a lover of domestic fiction then this is something you would definitely enjoy
